Daniel Scali from Adelaide, Australia has just been awarded the Guinness World Record for most pushups performed to correct form in the span of an hour, after footage of his attempt was reviewed and each of his reps was examined by adjudicators.
The existing record was held by a fellow Australian, Jarrad Young, who logged 2,806 reps in 2020. This record was broken by Marine Corps veteran Tshane Johnson in 2021 with 3,050 reps, but Young clawed back his title in the same year with 3,054: and that was the number that Scali had to beat.
He approached the challenge with a 12 seconds on, 6 seconds off format, and he would take those 6 second intervals to rehydrate and “compose” himself. “I do remember the first three or four minutes; I was breaking what I should have been hitting,” he says. “I was like, don’t burn yourself out Danny, you’ve done this before, don’t burn yourself out.”
Outside of the extreme muscle fatigue that any athlete would experience during a challenge like this, Scali also had to contend with severe pain in his right arm, as he lives with complex regional pain syndrome, a chronic pain condition which can be triggered by any number of physical stimuli.
Despite stating that his arm felt like it was on fire and “was going to drop off,” Scali stayed the course and completed 3,182 reps in one hour, officially breaking the previous world record. “I was so, so grateful that the amount of pushups I did in a day, every single one of them was approved,” he says.
This is not Scali’s first Guinness World Record. In 2021, he was recognized for holding the world’s longest plank for a punishing 9 hours and 30 minutes.
“My first attempt with the plank was to prove to myself that I can do things, even though I do live with constant nerve pain,” he says. “This attempt here was also to prove that to other people. If you believe that you can do it, you can.”
