Michael Cohen Pitched Investors For A Powerful Ukrainian Oligarch’s Company

Viktor Topolov (right) Ukrainian Independent News and Information Agency Before he became President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Michael Cohen worked on behalf of a company controlled by another wealthy and well-connected man: Viktor Topolov, a politician whose associates are members of the Russian and Ukrainian underworld. The leader of Ukraine’s coal ministry and a personal friend of that country’s president, Topolov had been a board member at a state-run bank, the top executive at a construction company, and the president of a professional football club. But beyond his official titles, Topolov has also been investigated twice for money laundering and embezzlement, and the FBI has said his associates are “well known” members of the Russian mafia. Back in 2006, he co-owned an ethanol company with his longtime business partner, Alex Oronov. The two men wanted to build a factory in Ukraine, so Oronov tapped his son-in-law, Bryan Cohen, along with his brother, Michael Cohen, to pit..

Here’s What The UK Election Result Could Mean For Brexit

Theresa May at a European Union summit in Brussels last year. Thierry Charlier / AFP / Getty Images Theresa May called this snap unexpected election with one objective: to strengthen her mandate ahead of Brexit negotiations. Like David Cameron before her, the prime minister will have reassured the European Union’s other 27 member states she was confident her gamble would pay off. Like Cameron, she was wrong. The EU's chief Brexit negotiator tweeted on Friday morning: "#Brexit negotiations should start when UK is ready; timetable and EU positions are clear. Let's put our minds together on striking a deal." European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker said he hopes there would be "no further" delay to the start of negotiations, and that "as far as the Commission is concerned we can open negotiations tomorrow morning at half past nine". The emphasis on the need to make a deal was echoed by EU Council president Donald Tusk, who tweeted this warning to the next UK governme..

Venezuelans Are Trying To Crowdfund Money To Leave The Country

Dozens of accounts have been set up in recent months by Venezuelans on the crowdfunding platform Generosity. Thousands of people in Venezuela have taken to the streets in protest as opposition groups stage nationwide demonstrations demanding early elections. The protests are part of a larger movement that has been growing in Venezuela over the past few weeks. Years of rising oil prices, inflation, and political unrest have thrown Venezuela into turmoil. People face a daily struggle to obtain basic items like food and medicine, and these shortages have created a hugely expensive black market in the country. George Castellanos / AFP / Getty Images Things have gotten so bad now that Venezuelans are turning to crowdfunding platforms to raise enough money so they can leave the country. generosity.com Gutierrez told BuzzFeed News she's "always had the dream of traveling overseas for a better capacity of music and arts" but that the worsening situation in Venezuela has held h..

This Anti-Abortion Leader Is Charged With Laundering Money From A European Dictatorship

Vano Shlamov / AFP / Getty Images A former Italian lawmaker with links to some of the largest social conservative organizations in the US and Europe is under investigation for allegedly accepting millions in exchange for helping muzzle Europe’s top human rights body. The lawmaker’s name is Luca Volonté, and until 2013 he led the largest bloc in what’s called the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Since leaving elected office, Volonté has been a major player in circles of “pro-family” activists working to build an international movement. He served as the chairman of the Dignitatis Humanae Institute when it hosted a video address inside the Vatican in 2014 by Steve Bannon, then Breitbart’s executive chairman and now President Donald Trump’s top strategist. That year, the World Congress of Families lauded Volonté’s work “building organizations and networks which support the natural family” by presenting him with a “Family and Truth” award during its meeting in Salt Lake Cit..

Things Are So Bad In Venezuela That People Are Walking To Brazil For Medicine

The humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, marked by over a year of shortages, is so bad that people are walking over the border into Brazil to get the food and medicines they need. Juan Barreto / AFP / Getty Images A new Human Rights Watch report based on interviews conducted with 60 Venezuelans in February shows how the country's worsening humanitarian crisis has spilled over the Brazilian border. The interviewees said they left Venezuela because they lacked the means to buy food and medicine there, and because of the country's growing crime rate. Venezuelan Geraldine Dhil, 32, walked 125 miles to the Brazilian city of Boa Vista, hoping to find a job there so she can buy medicine for her 13-year-old daughter, who has cancer. Barbara Rosales, 21, was six months pregnant when she went to a Venezuelan hospital in Santa Elena de Uairén. This Is Not A Joke Or ’90s Movie: Here’s How A Trade War With...

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump Tuesday turned a simmering dispute between the U.S. and Canada into an open confrontation, announcing a 20% tariff on Canadian softwood lumber imports and threatening in a tweet to go after the Canadian dairy industry. The Trump administration argues the tariffs, which can hit a maximum of 24%, are a response to Canada illegally subsidizing its lumber industry. Canada denies it does any such thing. And while the the tariffs are a new and not entirely shocking development in a trade dispute that dates back to the 1980s, there are signs this could be a step towards a broader trade war between the two nations. After a friendly meeting in Washington earlier this year with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Trump said he was mostly happy with Canadian trade and just wanted to make some tweaks to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). But now — with plans for a wall with Mexico hitting obstacles — he’s expressing broader ambitions for the N..

Trump’s First National Security Adviser Is In Even More Trouble Over His Russia Payments

Chip Somodevilla / Getty Images The leaders of the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday said that former White House National Security Advisor Michael Flynn appears to have not properly disclosed payments he received from Russia to the US government. Reps. Jason Chaffetz and Elijah Cummings, the chair and ranking member of the committee, told reporters Tuesday that following a briefing with the Defense Intelligence Agency (which Flynn once headed), they believed that the former general had not properly listed income he received in 2015 from Moscow. "Personally, I see no information or no data to support the notion that General Flynn complied with the law, and that is, he was supposed to seek permission and receive permission from both the secretary of state and the secretary of the Army prior to traveling to Russia to not only accept that payment but to engage in that activity," Chaffetz said. "I see no evidence that he actually did that." Flynn — who was fired in February, just 24 d..

Google Is Making It Easier To Translate India’s Most Widely Used Languages

Google Google is making translations between English and major Indian languages much better. On Tuesday, the company announced that it has begun applying its Neural Machine Translation technology to translations between English and nine of the most widely used Indian languages — Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujrati, Punjabi, Malayalam and Kannada. Google first talked about Neural Machine Translation in November. The technology translates entire sentences at once, rather than translating single words and stringing them together, which, the company says, leads to smoother and more accurate translations. Supporting Indian languages is crucial for Google. According to the company’s estimates, roughly one-third of India's 1.3 billion people use the internet — more than the population of the United States. However, of these 400 million or so internet users, just 20% are fluent in English. How Google helps these people navigate the English-language internet could well decide..
