A Network Of Russian-Language News Sites Is Secretly Owned By Kremlin, Investigation Finds

Ria Novosti / Reuters A network of Russian language news sites based in the Baltics is secretly owned by the Kremlin-owned holding that runs Russia Today and Sputnik, an investigation by Re:Baltica, a Latvian outlet, has found. The investigation showed that Baltnews, a network of sites targeting the Russian speaking minority in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, was actually owned by Rossiya Segodnya, the holding company created in November 2014 to run a host of Kremlin-owned news outlets. The investigation, by reporters Inga Spriņģe and Sanita Jemberga, said Rossiya Segodnya’s ownership was “obscured by a chain of owners, seemingly designed to make it appear as though Baltnews arose from local organizations.” Re:Baltica found that the outlets’ websites are registered to a company called Media Capital Holding B.V., based in the small Dutch town of Hilversum. Re:Baltica found that that company, in turn, is owned by a Russian-registered company called Media-Kapital, which in turn is owned b..

A Man Started A Small Pro-EU Rally Last Year. Now Thousands Are Showing Up...

Kevin Coombs / Reuters BERLIN — Daniel Röder had had enough. After the Brexit vote in the UK and the election of Donald Trump in the United States, he said he felt it was time to act. So he sent out an email last November to friends and acquaintances, inviting them to meet up in a square in central Frankfurt. With elections due in the Netherlands, France, and Germany, it was time to stand up for Europe, he wrote. On a wet, dark afternoon, about 150 people showed up. Among them was Stephanie Hartung, who, like Röder, is a lawyer. “People who believe in the European idea need to become visible and audible," Röder told the small crowd. After the Frankfurt gathering, Röder, Hartung, and a handful of others got together to come up with a plan. They drafted 10 principles, and little over a month later, in mid-January, they formed Pulse of Europe. Pulse of Europe The format is simple: Every week, people meet for an hour in squares across the Europe to show their support for the EU. Anyon..

The Pentagon Is Confused Over Trump’s Apparent About-Face On Syria

Mark Wilson / Getty Images WASHINGTON — Pentagon officials were left confused after President Donald Trump appeared to signal a potential future policy change toward Syria with tough words against the government’s deployment of chemical weapons. Trump said on Wednesday, at a joint press conference with Jordan’s King Abdullah II, that images of children and other civilians killed by a suspected sarin gas attack a day earlier in the Syrian city of Idlib “crosses many lines, beyond a red line, many many lines.” He said he was appalled by the attack and called it “unacceptable,” while adding that his opinion of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had changed. He appeared to open the door to US action in response to the chemical attack, as had his ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, earlier in the day while chairing an emergency session of the Security Council. But three defense officials told BuzzFeed News they cannot begin to craft a military response, if that is what Trump wants..

"We were likewise deeply disturbed by local authorities statements that apparently condone and even incite violence against LGBTI persons," the statement said. "We are very concerned by the widespread discrimination and violence against LGBTI persons in Russia or any society. We call on the Russian government to protect all people from discrimination and violence, and allow the free exercise of the freedoms o..

Here’s What Trump And China’s President Will Be Meeting About In Florida

Fabrice Coffrini / AFP / Getty Images BEIJING — There’s a lot on the line when President Donald Trump meets his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, for the first time on Thursday. After months of the equivalent of policy whiplash from the US, China watchers and the country’s foreign policy elite are closely watching the pending summit for signals on the future of the world’s most important bilateral relationship. Trump’s nascent China policy has been marked by swings in rhetoric that have left onlookers guessing about the administration’s plans. The two leaders are set to meet on Thursday at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida for informal talks expected to set the tone for relations between the world’s two biggest economic powers. “This first meeting is a test of whether the Trump administration can send a calibrated message rather than a chaotic one on US–China relations,” said Graham Webster, a senior fellow in US-China relations at Yale Law School. “The administration still has no c..

Here’s How Tamil Nadu Farmers Have Been Trying To Get Your Attention For The...

While the farmers protest with skulls, dead snakes and even rats, there has been no response from the central government yet. On March 14, farmers from Tamil Nadu arrived in New Delhi's Jantar Mantar to protest farmer suicides happening back in their home state. Due to a dire drought situation, the farmers have been pleading the government for debt relief. In February, Tamil Nadu CM Edappadi Palanisami offered ₹2,247 crore to more than 32 lakh farmers in the state. The protests have ranged from farmers sitting with garlands of skulls of their dead friends, putting live rats and dead snakes in their mouths, and even shaving half their heads to make their point. However, they have not yet received a response from the central government or any relief. Here’s How Nicola Sturgeon Could Hold An Independence Referendum Without May’s Permission

Russell Cheyne / PA Wire/PA Images There is a potential legal loophole that Nicola Sturgeon could exploit in order to be able to hold a second independence referendum without Theresa May's permission, legal experts have told BuzzFeed News. Speaking at an event at Stanford University on Tuesday, the first minister pointed out that the question of whether or not the Scottish parliament must be granted permission from the UK government to hold a referendum has "never been tested in court". Speaking about the Scotland Act – which sets out what powers are devolved to the Scottish parliament – Sturgeon said: “One of the things it reserved to the UK government is the constitution, which is quite a vague term. "It’s never been tested in court but in 2014 we accepted that for there to be a referendum in Scotland, for the Scottish parliament to legislate for a referendum, it required the legal consent of the UK government.” Last week, Sturgeon formally requested to begin negotiations with ..
