Lobbyists’ Foreign Agent Filing Raises Questions

Getty A mysterious filing by a Washington lobbying powerhouse is raising more questions about the firm’s role in lobbying on behalf of foreign governments. Mercury Public Affairs — which was recently forced, alongside former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort, to disclose lobbying on behalf of political interests in Ukraine — filed a “foreign agent” disclosure in February on behalf of the Brooklyn-based “Libertas Foundation.” The filing lists a contract for $15,000 a month for work related to “Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia and Greece.” However, the filing does not list a foreign agent — one of the key purposes of a Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) filing. “This does not track. There’s no foreign principal here,” Brett Kappel, a partner at Akerman who specializes in government ethics, told BuzzFeed News after reviewing Mercury’s FARA filing. “They’re admitting they’re doing work that’s beneficial to five different countries, but they haven’t said who their foreign princ..

This Syrian Artist Wants World Leaders To Know What It Feels Like To Be...

“Maybe they will feel what it feels like to be vulnerable,” said Abdalla Al Omari, who created a series of paintings that show prominent world leaders as displaced civilians. This is Abdalla Al Omari, a Syrian artist who fled his country after the war began in 2011 and sought asylum in Belgium. Abdalla Al Omari / Via Facebook: Abdalla.Omari.Art Omari has spent the last 19 months working on a project in which he reimagines world leaders as displaced civilians. The Vulnerability Series, according to Omari, takes away all the strength and charisma from the leaders and shows them in moments of despair. Abdalla Al Omari / Via Facebook: pg "I wanted to take away their power not to serve me and my pain but to give those leaders back their humanity and the audience an insight into what the power of vulnerability can achieve," Omari wrote in a statement about his exhibition. This Reporter Managed To Do Something NATO’s Leaders Couldn’t

CSPAN / Getty Images In under a minute, a modest reporter from Romania managed to do what the leaders of 27 countries and President Donald Trump's own staff couldn’t: get him to commit to NATO’s collective defense principle. On Friday, Trump explicitly endorsed Article 5 of NATO’s founding treaty, which requires allies to come to each other’s defense -- something he did not do during his widely-anticipated speech at NATO headquarters last month. That omission triggered a wave of anxiety from European leaders concerned about the president’s commitment for the military alliance. "Yes, absolutely I'd be committed to Article 5,” Trump said after fielding a question from Ramona Avramescu, a Romanian correspondent with TVR News, during a joint press conference with the president of Romania. "Certainly we are there to protect and that's one of the reasons that I want people to make sure we have a very, very strong force, by paying the kind of money necessary to have that force..

Northern Ireland Politicians Say Theresa May’s Dependence On The DUP Could Damage The Peace...

DUP leader Arlene Foster with her party's candidates Charles Mcquillan / Getty Images Theresa May's decision to seek an agreement with the Democratic Unionist Party to prop up her government risks causing lasting damage to the Northern Irish peace process, politicians have warned. After failing to secure enough votes to command a majority at Westminster, May has announced she will attempt to run a minority government through support from the controversial Northern Irish party’s 10 MPs. But Northern Irish politicians say they fear that means Conservatives will no longer be seen as impartial facilitators of the Northern Ireland peace process, endangering ongoing talks to try reach a power-sharing deal in the region. Northern Ireland is currently without a government as power-sharing between nationalists and unionists collapsed in January. The parties have been in intensive negotiations to reach an agreement to return to power-sharing. The talks were paused during the general..

America’s Strikes On Syrian Forces Are Leaving Syrians Confused About WTF Is Happening

Provided to BuzzFeed News The US-led coalition against ISIS struck pro-Syrian government forces for the third time in recent weeks, prompting speculation among Syrians about what it means for their civil war, even as the US military tries to downplay its significance. “We certainly welcome any strike against the regime, but we want the real efforts to support the Syrian people and not to increase division in the region,” said Mustafa Serjari, a spokesperson for the Al-Mutasem brigade, a Syrian rebel group backed by the US. BuzzFeed News first reported in May that US forces have been stationed at a base in Al Tanf, in southeastern Syria, for over six months now as part of a mission to train members of the Syrian opposition meant to aid in the fight against ISIS. In each instance where the US has fired on pro-Syrian forces, the US military has said, armed vehicles have entered an area that Russia, which backs the regime, and the US had agreed to be neutral ground. The strikes, which hav..

Here’s What Happened The Last Time Britain Had A Minority Government

James Callaghan (right) with trade union leaders. Douglas Miller / Getty Images The Tory government called a snap election with just a few weeks’ notice. It was a time of national crisis; the government had a small majority, and wanted to give itself room to manoeuvre. Its campaign warned that the left-wing Labour opposition would take money from voters’ pockets. But the gamble backfired badly – the Conservatives' vote slumped, their majority vanished, and Labour was resurgent. But this was not June 2017, it was February 1974; the Tory leader was Edward Heath, and his Labour opponent Harold Wilson. Four decades before Theresa May threw away her majority in an unnecessary election, Britain went through a tumultuous few years of minority government, political uncertainty, and endless horsetrading over votes to keep the country running. The parallels between that period and the new political reality of 2017 offer a stark illustration of the difficulties of surviving as a governmen..

Marine Le Pen’s Party Is Running Dozens Of Candidates Who Post Hateful Messages Online

Marine Le Pen, the far-right politician who recently lost to Emmanuel Macron in the second round of the French presidential election, declared it her mission to "de-demonize" France's National Front, a party long known for its racism and anti-Semitism. Francois Lo Presti / AFP / Getty Images In January 2016, Le Pen appointed a National Front official to root out legislative election candidates whose outrageous remarks would tarnish the party's image. The official, Jean-Lin Lacapelle, told Le Figaro he would review National Front candidates across France and dismiss any who were out of line. French voters go to the polls this Sunday for legislative elections to select the National Assembly. A BuzzFeed News investigation of the social media activity of 573 National Front candidates found that the party's process of policing its own members has failed. Michael Cohen Pitched Investors For A Powerful Ukrainian Oligarch’s Company

Viktor Topolov (right) Ukrainian Independent News and Information Agency Before he became President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Michael Cohen worked on behalf of a company controlled by another wealthy and well-connected man: Viktor Topolov, a politician whose associates are members of the Russian and Ukrainian underworld. The leader of Ukraine’s coal ministry and a personal friend of that country’s president, Topolov had been a board member at a state-run bank, the top executive at a construction company, and the president of a professional football club. But beyond his official titles, Topolov has also been investigated twice for money laundering and embezzlement, and the FBI has said his associates are “well known” members of the Russian mafia. Back in 2006, he co-owned an ethanol company with his longtime business partner, Alex Oronov. The two men wanted to build a factory in Ukraine, so Oronov tapped his son-in-law, Bryan Cohen, along with his brother, Michael Cohen, to pit..
