Trump Rolls Back Obama’s Cuba Policies On Travel And Trade

Ramon Espinosa / AP MEXICO CITY, Mexico — Ignoring widespread calls from members of his own party, business leaders, and human rights groups, President Donald Trump announced a rollback of some of the Cuba-friendly policies undertaken by his predecessor on Friday. US citizens will no longer be able to engage in individual leisure travel to Cuba, according to a fact sheet circulated by the White House. The US government will also ensure that no profits from American businesses benefit Cuba's military. "Effective immediately, I am canceling the last administration's completely one-sided deal with Cuba," Trump said during an appearance in Miami. Trump announced that the US will enforce the embargo and travel ban while keeping the embassy in Havana open. "When Cuba is ready to take concrete steps to these ends we will be ready, willing and able to come to the table to negotiate a much better deal for Cubans, for Americans," Trump said. US citizens will no longer be able to engage in individual leisure travel to Cuba, the officials said. The US government will also ensure that no profits from American businesses benefit Cuba's military. Meet The American Who Called Into Putin’s Marathon Question And Answer Session

Arizona resident Jeremy Bowling loves reviewing movies, and trying to get Americans to understand that they’ve got Vladimir Putin all wrong. Russian President Vladimir Putin is nothing if not a man of tradition. And one of his favorites is his annual call-in show, where he marathons through questions from his citizens. Among this year's highlights: a rousing chorus from "singing shamans on Siberia’s Lake Baikal, an oath ceremony for army conscripts in Volgograd," and a seemingly sarcastic offer to former FBI director James Comey to find asylum within Russia's borders. Kirill Kudryavtsev / AFP / Getty Images But this year, something a little different happened: Putin took a question from a random American, and answered it on live TV. Mikhail Klimentiev / AFP / Getty Images The question came from Arizona resident Jeremy Bowling, who described himself in the YouTube video he posted with his question as "a very big supporter" and "very pro-Russian." "As an Am..

Mexico is one of the most dangerous places to be a reporter, with six journalists alone killed there in 2017. This week, more than 70 media organizations and civil society groups are organizing to demand action against the violence. Henry Romero / Reuters Javier Valdez, a journalist from Sinaloa state, became the latest reporter to be assassinated when he was attacked May 15 by armed men in the streets of Culiacán. On June 3, an indigenous radio host from Guerrero was shot in the head while leaving her workplace. Just days ago the magazine Proceso was the subject of an attempted raid. In response, Mexican journalists and news organizations have launched a project called #AgendaDePeriodistas, or "The Journalists' Agenda," to come up with proposals for media outlets and the government to guarantee their physical security. They're beginning with a series of roundtable discussions this week in Mexico City. "Mexican society does not understand what it has lost when a journa..

The US Just Issued Arrest Warrants For 12 Of Erdogan’s Security Guards

Adem Altan / AFP / Getty Images Authorities in Washington, DC, announced on Thursday that 12 members of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s security detail would face criminal charges for violently suppressing a group of peaceful protesters outside the Turkish ambassador’s residence last month. Announcing the charges, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and Police Chief Peter Newsham decried the actions of the guards as an assault on free speech, and said the charges should send a message to the world that the capital of the United States was a safe space for free expression. “I condemn this attack. It was an affront to our values as Washingtonians and Americans,” said Bowser. “Here in DC we are committed to protecting and safeguarding [free assembly].” Tasos Katopodis / Getty Images The charges come almost a month after Erdogan’s guards made international headlines when cell phones and video cameras caught the men kicking, choking, and shoving protesters on Washington’s Sheridan Circle...

Uber Rape Survivor Sues The Company For Circulating Her Medical Records

Reuters The Indian woman who was raped by her Uber driver in New Delhi in 2014, and who sued and settled with the San Francisco-based ride-hailing company in 2015, is suing the company and its executives again. The woman, who remains anonymous and relocated to Texas in 2016, filed a lawsuit against Uber, its CEO Travis Kalanick and now former executives Eric Alexander and Emil Michael, alleging that they invaded her privacy and defamed her by illegally obtaining and circulating her medical records within the company following the incident. She is pursuing her claim in a federal court in the Northern District of California. The court filing alleges that just a few days after the victim was raped in December 2014, Eric Alexander, Uber’s then head of business for Asia Pacific, met with Delhi police and obtained her confidential medical records. Lawyers in India that BuzzFeed News spoke to had said that there was no way Uber could have accessed the records legally. The filing also allege..
