Brazil Is Coming To Snatch The “Most Extra Politics” Crown From The US

US: Wow, our politics is bonkers right now! UK: Wanna bet? Brazil: Hold my caipirinha. Chip Somodevilla / Getty Images But, if we may, Brazil is definitely giving them both a run for their money. The rolling crisis in Latin America's largest country involves more than 1,000 politicians, at least $2 billion lost to corruption, a website called Jesus.com, and even a self-proclaimed warlock! Victor Moriyama / Getty Images Brazil has been in a state of crisis since 2014. TWO THOUSAND AND FOURTEEN. Way back in 2014, when Taylor Swift was recovering from her breakup with Harry Styles and Hillary Clinton was still pretending that she wasn’t running for president, Brazilian prosecutors were investigating a money laundering scheme based out of a car wash in Brasilia, the country’s capital. Feeling creative, the investigators called it Operation Car Wash. The scheme revolved around the state-run oil company Petrobras, which Brazil’s largest construction companies systematicall..

Everyone’s Talking About Soft Brexit So Here’s What That Could Really Mean

Leon Neal/WPA Pool / Getty There has been much talk since last week’s election that Britain could seek a “softer Brexit” following Theresa May’s failure to secure a Commons majority. With the PM severely weakened, the Evening Standard reports that May’s cabinet now has a “sensibles” wing who are arguing against "creationists" that the UK should now prioritise jobs and the economy over cutting immigration. Some Labour and Tory MPs have gone as far as suggesting that the UK could even try to stay in the single market. But there is little agreement and a lot of confusion – in both main parties – as to what a softer Brexit would actually mean in practice. “The UK position already lacked substance. Now it is even more unclear,” a senior European government official told BuzzFeed News. Beyond tweaks to the contours of any deal, or adopting a less belligerent language, a fundamentally different approach to Brexit to the one envisioned by May would require a substantial change to several of ..

Revealed: Explosive Evidence Of A Russian Assassination On British Soil That The Government Doesn’t...

The British government is suppressing explosive intelligence that Alexander Perepilichnyy, a financier who exposed a vast financial crime by Russian government officials, was likely assassinated on the direct orders of Vladimir Putin. Perepilichnyy, who faced repeated threats after fleeing to Britain, was found dead outside his home in Surrey after returning from a mysterious trip to Paris in 2012. Despite an expert detecting signs of a fatal plant poison in his stomach, the British police have insisted there was no evidence of foul play, and Theresa May’s government has invoked national security powers to withhold evidence from the inquest into his cause of death – which is ongoing. But an investigation by BuzzFeed News has now obtained fresh evidence that the authorities have deliberately sidelined, and has uncovered how Perepilichnyy spent his last days in Paris. Secret documents and interviews with more than a dozen current and former intelligence and law enforcement officials in t..

Lobbyists’ Foreign Agent Filing Raises Questions

Getty A mysterious filing by a Washington lobbying powerhouse is raising more questions about the firm’s role in lobbying on behalf of foreign governments. Mercury Public Affairs — which was recently forced, alongside former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort, to disclose lobbying on behalf of political interests in Ukraine — filed a “foreign agent” disclosure in February on behalf of the Brooklyn-based “Libertas Foundation.” The filing lists a contract for $15,000 a month for work related to “Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia and Greece.” However, the filing does not list a foreign agent — one of the key purposes of a Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) filing. “This does not track. There’s no foreign principal here,” Brett Kappel, a partner at Akerman who specializes in government ethics, told BuzzFeed News after reviewing Mercury’s FARA filing. “They’re admitting they’re doing work that’s beneficial to five different countries, but they haven’t said who their foreign princ..
