Mohamed Al-bakour / AFP / Getty Images Dozens of people, including at least nine children, have been killed in a reported chemical attack on the town of Khan Sheikhoun in northern Syria, according to a Syrian monitoring group. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based network, said 58 people are dead after fighter jets bombed the town in Idlib province on Tuesday. A Fulbright Scholar Can’t Finish His Studies Because He Was Stopped From Flying Back...

This is Zia Hussain Shah, 25, from Karachi, in Pakistan. He is a Fulbright scholar at the University of Chicago. Zia Hussain Shah. Studying divinity at a US university had been a high school dream for Shah, but the postgraduate student had his studies halted when he was returning to the US at the international airport in Karachi on 4 January – despite having the necessary documents. "I went through all the clearances for a whole year", Shah said, speaking to BuzzFeed News on the phone from his family home in Karachi. "It's almost impossible to believe." Shah said he only discovered his entry back to the US had been blocked when he got to the airport. "We cannot let you go," Shah was told by border agents, who said they had received a confidential email instructing them not to let him pass. The incident came at the beginning of the year, shortly before there was heightened attention on President Trump's proposed ban on anyone arriving from seven Muslim-majority countries — ..

India’s National ID Program May Be Turning The Country Into A Surveillance State

In February 2017, Microsoft announced Skype Lite, a brand-new edition of Skype just for India. A more spartan version of Microsoft’s marquee messaging service, Skype Lite is designed to run well on cheap Android phones and to handle calls over flaky 2G data networks — the trappings of an app made by a large, wealthy corporation for a large and largely poor emerging market. But that’s not all it does. Skype Lite also taps into a giant government-owned database filled with the demographic and biometric records — names, dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, photographs, iris and fingerprint scans — of more than a billion Indian citizens. Touting that feature onstage at a launch event in Mumbai, Microsoft's executives offered the most vanilla of demos: a job interview over Skype. “If I want to hire somebody, I would feel more comfortable knowing that I am indeed talking to the right candidate,” said Skype engineer Rahul Malegaonkar. To do that in in Skype Lite, he explained, all ..

Behrouz Boochani/Supplied Lebanese asylum seeker Azzam El Sheikh attempted to reach Australia by boat in 2013 and was detained on Manus Island. He has not been granted refugee status and was marked for deportation back to Lebanon. But on March 31, when immigration officials attempted to forcibly deport El Sheikh, he allegedly self harmed, which caused an unspecified chest injury. A video sent to BuzzFeed News by refugees on Manus Island show El Sheikh lying on a piece of cardboard on the floor. He claims he has been unable to receive medication attention or painkillers for his injury. The video is titled "Message to Mr Turnbull". The Trump Administration Just Cut All Funding For The UN’s Family Planning Agency

Oswaldo Rivas / Reuters The State Department on Monday officially cut off funding to a United Nations agency that works on maternal and reproductive health, a policy shift experts and activists say will be a major blow to women worldwide. Undersecretary for Political Affairs Thomas J. Shannon said in a policy document obtained by BuzzFeed News that UNFPA "supports, or participates in the management of, a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization" in China. Such support would be a violation of the 1985 Kemp-Kasten Amendment, the document says. Last year, the US was UNFPA's third-largest donor, contributing $75 million to its operations, according to the agency. The State Department's determination contradicts its own 2001 inquiry into whether UNFPA funding supports coercive Chinese reproductive health policies. UNFPA also denies that its funding supports the measures, and public health experts say there's no clear support for the claim. "The irony is tha..

Carter Page Photo Illustration BuzzFeed News; Page: Getty Images (2) NEW YORK — A former campaign adviser for Donald Trump met with and passed documents to a Russian intelligence operative in New York City in 2013. The adviser, Carter Page, met with a Russian intelligence operative named Victor Podobnyy, who was later charged by the US government alongside two others for acting as unregistered agents of a foreign government. The charges, filed in January 2015, came after federal investigators busted a Russian spy ring that was seeking information on US sanctions as well as efforts to develop alternative energy. Page is an energy consultant. A court filing by the US government contains a transcript of a recorded conversation in which Podobnyy speaks with one of the other men busted in the spy ring, Igor Sporyshev, about trying to recruit someone identified as “Male-1.” BuzzFeed News has confirmed that “Male-1” is Page. The revelation of Page’s connection to Russian intelligence — whi..

The Pentagon Now Knows That To Get To Trump, You Go Through Jared Kushner

Jared Kushner speaks with Marine Corps Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, before departing for Iraq from Ramstein Air Base, Germany Handout / Reuters WASHINGTON — Within the halls of the Pentagon, the decision to invite Jared Kushner, the senior adviser to the president who just happens to be his son-in-law, on a military trip to Iraq was heralded as an unconventional — yet brilliant — political move. After all, Kushner, perhaps more than any other White House adviser is responsible for a seemingly limitless portfolio of matters, both foreign and domestic – Middle East peace, the upcoming visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Mar-a-Lago, reforming the entirety of the federal government, and combating opioid addiction to name a few. And while past administrations depended on the National Security Council or a coterie of long-time political operatives, the early days of the Trump administration suggests that to reach Trump, one must travel through th..
